Programmes

NIT Silchar offers B.Tech, M.Tech , and Ph.D. programmes in Civil Engineering, where B.Tech is the undergraduate programme, while M.Tech and Ph.D. are postgraduate programmes. The details of these programmes are provided below.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME (B. TECH)

The UG B.Tech. programme consists of eight semesters and is a professional engineering degree, affiliated with and awarded upon completion of 4 years of extensive engineering study and research. Civil engineering students will learn basic engineering techniques, like other engineering students, during the first-year course, which includes Engineering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Activities (Such as Welding, Fitting, Carpentry, etc.), Engineering Drawing, and Basic Programming. From the second year, they are exposed to core civil Engineering subjects, including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, earthquake engineering, and costing & estimation, among others. This programme is one of the most popular core and in-demand branches, not only in India but also worldwide.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME (M. TECH.)

The M.Tech. programme in Civil Engineering provides advanced knowledge in various areas of Civil Engineering. The programme is designed so that a student can complete it based solely on advanced coursework. However, the students are given the option to concentrate on a problem by substituting some of the courses with equivalent project work. The standard M.Tech. is a two-year programme, during which the first two semesters are spent completing courses. A one-year project commences at the end of the 2nd semester. The project typically has a strong research component. The department presently fosters M. Tech. programme in the following specializations: Water Resources Engineering, Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. programme is a post-graduate programme focused on original research that can lead to publications in premier conferences or journals, offering a significant opportunity for academic recognition and contribution. It is the highest level of degree that a student can achieve. Students are required to complete some coursework in the first few semesters (the required coursework can vary based on the student's background), but then transition completely to research. Many Ph.D. scholars also teach B.Tech students, and they run numerous labs.
